Display Energy Certificates (DEC)

What is a display energy certificate?

A display energy certificate (DEC) is a certificate which provides an energy efficiency and carbon emissions rating of the building and which must be displayed on public buildings. The qualification criteria is that the building must be occupied or part occupied with a total usable floor area over 1000m2.

Who is required to have a display energy certificate?

DEC’s are required by any Public Authority including local and central Governments, NHS trusts, MOD, Schools, Universities, Executive Agencies and regulatory bodies or a building which is frequently visited by a large number of the public. The DEC should be clearly displayed on the premises for the public to see.

A display energy certificate (DEC) shows the actual energy usage of a building and allows the public to see the energy efficiency of the building.

For how long is a Display Energy Certificate valid?

A DEC is valid for one year and is always accompanied by a report outlining cost effective measures to improve the energy rating of the building, to reduce energy usage and carbon emissions.
