What is an Energy Performance Certificate?
An energy performance certificate (EPC) is a certificate addressing energy efficiency and carbon emissions rating on all commercial, residential buildings, new build, sold or let. An A is the highest rating for energy efficiency and zero carbon emissions whereas a G rating shows poor energy performance and higher carbon emissions.
The EPC is similar to the labels which are currently provided for white goods such as washing machines and refrigerators.
EPC’s are assessed using standard methods and assumptions for comparison with similar buildings. In turn, this allows owners, prospective purchasers and tenants to evaluate cost effectiveness of energy performance and carbon emissions of the building.
The report incorporates recommendations for improving the energy rating and carbon emissions which, if implemented, would make the building more energy efficient, cost effective and possibly achieve an improved rating.
