Sustainability Explained

According to English environmentalist and author Jonathon Porritt, “The economy is, in the first instance, a subsystem of human society … which is itself, in the second instance, a subsystem of the totality of life on Earth (the biosphere). And no subsystem can expand beyond the capacity of the total system of which it is a part.
Put simply into a context relevant to businesses managers – ‘Sustainability’ can be considered as ‘ethical efficiency’.
That is, ‘conducting business by using less resources without exploitation and by working towards a position where your business can sustain its operation, through to the outer reaches of its supply chain, indefinitely by using renewable resources and without damaging the environment.’
The benefits of sustainability are many:
- By reducing your consumption of energy, water, transport miles and consumables, through better process management and use of ‘appropriate’ technology. Yields savings
- By sourcing services from like minded suppliers , thus ‘greening the supply chain’ Yields credibility
- By offsetting carbon emissions and becoming ‘carbon neutral’. yields more business
- By educating staff and encouraging behavioural change thus creating better working environments and job satisfaction/security . Yields strength
